Open Source Cars and More

Docs for mucking around with the OSD (Open Source Device) are available on the company's wiki and an online community is even available to help along in the development.

Currently the device uses memory card or USB storage to store video and is great for consolidating old video libraries spread across video tapes and DVDs along with TV programs received off of cable boxes and other devices with standard video output. Hobbyists could in theory though hack on other video inputs presumably as well. (For the more techno-intimidated, the device could be bought for about $230 at major retail electronics stores).

What's so exciting about projects like the OSD is their ability to tap into the “long tail effect" for hardware. In the past, the cost models of major brands, like Blockbuster, only made it profitable to go after the markets with the broadest appeal.

Behind Huckabee's radical 'Fair Tax'

You wouldn't pay income tax, Social Security and Medicare payroll taxes, the alternative minimum tax, a capital gains tax or estate tax. No more complex tax returns to fill out, either.

Instead, everyone would pay a flat sales tax on almost everything they buy: Food, clothes, new cars, diapers, even health care and financial services.

How high would the sales tax be?

Under the proposal, you'd pay a 30% mark-up over the pre-tax price.

Hang on... I read another story about this and it said the Fair Tax would be 23%

Well, it depends on how you want to do the math.

Say you buy a $1 pack of gum, and then pay 30% in tax, for a total price of $1.30. The extra 30 cents you paid is 23% of $1.30.

Sales tax supporters frequently cite the number as percentage of your spending.

News Minute: First votes in New Hampshire...LSU wins title...Rare ...

DIXVILLE NOTCH, N.H. (AP) - Barack Obama and John McCain have early leads in New Hampshire's primary voting after two small towns cast ballots around midnight. Democrat Obama got 16 votes in the towns of Hart's Location and Dixville Notch, while McCain led the Republican field with 10.

MARSHFIELD, Mo. (AP) - Violent weather Monday from Wisconsin to Oklahoma. Two women have been killed by rare January tornadoes in Missouri, after a couple of days of unseasonably warm weather across the Midwest.

MIAMI (AP) - A federal judge must decide this week whether an American citizen held for more than three years as an enemy combatant should spend the rest of his life behind bars. Jose Padilla (puh-DEE'-uh) is accused of being part of a network that funneled recruits, money and supplies to Islamic extremists around the world.

Church Plows County's Outdated Zoning Issue

We'll say we allow the church but here are the conditions. They conditions are almost impossible to meet," Pastor David Vega told CBS4's Natalia Zea. County commissioners voted in early December on repealing the law.

Joe Arpaio and Andrew Thomas are teaching the rest of the nation how ...

This compilation easily could serve as a "Greatest Hits" of the Phoenix indie-rock scene. The CD opens with "Various Kitchen Utensils" by Skybox, a band that relocated to Chicago a couple years ago but whom we still claim as our own because their brand of quirky ragtime rock is catchier than the most shameless of show tunes. There's also a track by What Laura Says Thinks And Feels, a band with a sublime sense of melody and harmony. Their song "Illustrated Manual" recalls the dreamy vocals of the Beach Boys' Pet Sounds, the upbeat piano of Beatles tunes like "Martha My Dear," and the guitar hooks of early Weezer songs. Other highlights include "The Executive" by The Craze, a danceable No Wave ditty that sounds sorta like Squeeze in the garage, circa 1979; "Guantanamo Bay" by Dakota and the Black River Bandit, a cheeky acoustic folk number that would make both Arlo Guthrie and Mojo Nixon proud; and "Chemistry" by Black Carl, a beatbox/blues/funk fusion featuring some sexy, soulful female vocals.
