Woods, Houston rap pioneer dies at 37

Used copies on Amazon.com are on sale for more than $40. That album included the popular Catch 'Em Slippin', which Woods (as Original E), DJ Boss and local producer/engineer Carlos Garza created based on an old sample of a song by New Orleans singer King Floyd.

Garza said he and Woods listened to hundreds of records at Garza's duplex to find the right sample. They assembled "a skeleton" for the song with just turntables and a drum machine.

"Plain and simple, we were just trying to find something that sounded like a hit single," Garza said.

Woods and DJ Boss built the song up from the demo into the version that appeared on the O.G. Style album. Another song from that album made regional ripples. Free World, with its "sitting in the Harris County jail" hook, was the flip side to a 12-inch of Slippin'.

A new state every three weeks

And, thanks to a long-distance relationship, about a half-dozen trips to California's East Bay.

Then again, California -- the southern and northern extremities of it, at least -- is home. In between school years growing up in Claremont (the so-called "City of Trees and Ph.D.s"), summers and winters were spent in a small fishing village nestled on the coast in the Redwoods, an hour or so south of the Oregon border. College took me to the Midwest; my journalism career took me to New York. But I couldn't shake the Midwest. So, five years ago, I moved back.

State police shoot, injure man after high-speed chase

MERCER, Pa. - A state trooper shot and wounded a man who led police on a high-speed chase Monday, authorities said.

Darren G. Millhoff, 30, of Farrell, was driving a stolen car when a Hermitage police officer began pursuing him around 1:40 a.m. State police joined the chase, which reached speeds of more than 70 mph, along Route 62 in East Lackawannock.

Police said the car driven by Millhoff rammed their vehicles several times before it was stopped.

Millhoff resisted arrest and a trooper was dragged by the suspect's vehicle, according to state police. A trooper fired a shot that struck Millhoff, who tried to flee again in the car before being stopped a second time.

Police took Millhoff to Sharon Regional Hospital. He was then flown to St.

Doff the crown, Mr. Mayor

I have a better chance of being asked to give the keynote speech at the Democratic convention than Mayor Willie Herenton has of getting an amendment to the Tennessee Constitution removing the power of suburban voters to veto consolidation with the city of Memphis.

Go to the source, the Constitution

The Dec. 31 letter to the editor "Founders' mistrust was justified" contains a conceptual flaw inherent in many opinions about the issue of religion and its place in government. I'd like to set the record straight.

The Founding Fathers were not trying to prevent the church from having influence over the government or the state. They were, in point of fact, trying to prevent two things: (1) the government from having control over religion, and (2) the establishment of a state religion (as in the official Church of England).
