Consumer group protests RBC Centura Bank's pending $1.6 billion buyout ...
A New York-based consumer advocacy group is trying to put the brakes on RBC Centura Bank's pending $1.6 billion buyout of Alabama National Bancorporation, the organization's top official said Wednesday. Fair Finance Watch, a nonprofit watchdog group, and its affiliate Inner City Press have urged federal banking regulators to delay the merger and investigate RBC's mortgage-lending practices, said Matthew Lee, executive director of Fair Finance Watch. RBC -- the U.S. subsidiary of Royal Bank of Canada -- has been involved in the "racially disproportionate" denial of home loans to blacks and Latinos, he said. Lee also claimed that RBC has been providing business loans to high-cost, quick-cash outlets often known for predatory lending. .

IN THE MARKETPLACE / Old phones, PCs an urban 'gold mine'
Used mobile phones and personal computers are attracting attention as "urban mines" that offer a rich seam of rare and precious metals such as gold, which is now well worth recovering as metal prices rise. However, the collection of used cell phones has been decreasing in recent years, and there are obstacles to the efficient extraction of metal from them. Every day, a line of heavy trucks forms in front of the 600-square-meter factory of metal recovery company Eco-system Recycling Co. in Honjo, Saitama Prefecture. The trucks are carrying used cell phones and parts from scrapped home appliances such as computers and TVs. Inside the factory are rows of drums full of circuit boards that workers have removed from the discarded appliances. Eco-system Recycling is an affiliate of major nonferrous metal company Dowa Holdings Co., and uses gold extraction technology bought from specialist suppliers.
