Honda Civic Hybrid
When most people think of hybrid automobiles, Toyota's quirky Prius is usually the first vehicle to come to mind. The mid-size hatchback continues to dominate the hybrid sales charts and remains Toyota's third best-selling car behind the Camry and Corolla/Matrix. Many attribute the Prius' success to its unorthodox shape, its remarkable fuel economy, relatively inexpensive price for a mid-sized vehicle and Toyota's perceived bulletproof reliability. Honda, on the other hand, has sat on the sidelines with its failed Insight 2-passenger hybrid and Accord Hybrid. The company's only other hybrid, the Civic Hybrid, has fallen far behind Toyota's shining star in sales. Whereas the Toyota Prius has managed to rack up sales of 167,009 units though the first 11 months of 2007 -- 16,737 of which were sold in November 2007 -- Honda only managed to sell 29,352 Civic Hybrids through November 2007.
Postcard from Turkey, karate makes big strides
BULA vinaka and Merhaba from Istanbul, Turkey. A group of karate supporters stepped on Turkish soil - October 17, after 20-ish hours of accumulated flight time via Korea for the 5th World Cadet & Junior Karate Championship (WCJKC). James Lenoa is the lone Fiji representative taking part in this Olympics of international karate events in the Junior-Cadet categories. The WCJKC ran for three consecutive days from Oct 19 to 21. This is the first time Fiji has a representative at the Junior-Cadet level. It's the dream of national sporting reps to earn her or his stripes at the country level, and to catch the discerning eye of the technical team selection panel. There is also an unofficial sideline selection panel (you know like unprofessional sideline coaches or couch refs).
Balancing Muslim causes, effects
A rabble rouser, controversy seeker and media magnet. Bedier, head of the leading Muslim advocacy group in Tampa, shrugs off the comparison. After all, his is not a national platform and, so far, he's avoided a political albatross like the 1987 Tawana Brawley incident that haunts Sharpton. Still, at a time when many people look distrustfully at Muslims, Bedier realizes he can't afford missteps. He fights a dual battle for Muslims' rights and favorable public perception. Some in the public have questioned the causes adopted by Bedier and the Central Florida chapter of the Council on American and Islamic Relations. This summer, Bedier appeared to support Ahmed Mohamed and Youssef Megahed, two University of South Florida students who were arrested near a South Carolina naval base after authorities accused them of carrying low-grade explosives in their car.

The 130 turbines would draw a combined total of up to one billion gallons of seawater daily and discharge the water back into the Sound at temperatures reaching 95 degrees Fahrenheit."Gordon said he did not anticipate the heated discharge causing any harm to fish, birds or the environment ..."Is it much of a stretch to imagine the apoplectic reaction of Cape Wind opponents to this announcement? Didn't think so.But the story is not so hypothetical after all; only the location is. Exactly what I described is taking place -- every day -- at the 1,521-megawatt Brayton Point power plant in Somerset (shown in the photo above, with the Braga Bridge in the foreground), situated amid one of the, ah, "less special" places in the state. From a story in yesterday's Boston Globe under the headline, "EPA reissue order vs.
Megliola: AHL All-Star Game coming to Worcester
In effect, all the teams operate as Triple-A affiliates for NHL teams. Here's the AHL impact: 83 percent of guys now playing in the NHL came through the AHL; 13 AHL grads have led the NHL in scoring; 16 NHL coaches cut their teeth (and probably chipped a few) in the AHL; last year, the Anaheim Ducks won the Stanley Cup and 24 players came through the AHL; 74 percent of AHL fans own their own home (I threw that in as a bonus, but it's true. They did a survey). "The All-Star Game will have a great impact economically," said Sharks' assistant general manager Michael Mudd. "Twenty-five thousand people will be coming into the market place over two or three days. Everything (we do) will be within walking distance of downtown. It's really a chance to showcase our league." The game will be televised throughout the U.S.
