Man jailed over terror act plans
A 29-year-old man has been jailed for four-and-a-half years after he admitted planning to fly to Pakistan to carry out acts of terrorism. Sohail Qureshi, a qualified dentist, told fellow extremists he planned to "kill many" during a two-to-three week mission, the Old Bailey heard. Qureshi, of Palmerston Road, Forest Gate, east London, was in e-mail contact with Samina Malik, the so-called "lyrical terrorist". As he prepared to fly out to Islamabad in October 2006, he asked Malik, a WHSmith employee who worked airside at Heathrow airport, about security arrangements. Malik, who wrote poems about martyrdom and beheading unbelievers, was given a suspended jail sentence last year after she was found guilty of storing a library of material for terrorism.
ESPN Radio silent - for now
ESPN Radio's local station is off the air for a few weeks, which explains the religious programming suddenly coming out of the radio at 920 AM. When ESPN comes back, though, it will be New York-centric, as it will carry the same sports programming as its flagship station at 1050 AM in New York. And the station itself will move to 1040 AM. Nassau Broadcasting, which owns the station at 920, will sign on at 1040 no later than Feb. 1, said Tristram E. Collins, Nassau's senior executive vice president. As part of a multi-year local marketing agreement with 1050 AM, the station at 1040, licensed in Flemington, N.J., will simulcast ESPN's New York station to listeners in Bucks County and South and Central New Jersey. The signal at 1040 will cover much of the same area that 920 can be heard, Collins said, adding that it would get a power boost.
Indian fury follows Test
Board of Control for Cricket in India secretary Niranjan Shah last night said the tour would proceed, but the scene was set for some heated combat in the remaining two Tests. Team manager Chetan Chauhan said last night: "The way the umpiring was, the team is agitated and they are upset. All of the decisions have gone against us and it really affected us. I have been informed by the BCCI they are lodging a strong protest with the ICC so that some of the incompetent umpires do not umpire in the rest of the series." Ponting last night revealed that he had struck a pre-series agreement with Kumble to accept the fielder's word on low catches, but it is in danger of being scrapped. "I'm sure we will have to review it," Kumble said. He singled out Michael Clarke for standing his ground after nicking a ball to first slip on day four.
